Justification:
Given present knowledge, this species currently is not threatened in its favoured geoclimatic area (southwest France and northwest Iberia). However, extensive water quality degradation and large-scale stream transformations (alteration of structure and functioning) constitute a future threat. In the rest of its range area, the species has been lost from the UK and The Netherlands, has clearly declined in Belgium, and remains very rare in Germany. From the literature, it is scattered over only 20 streams and lakes in Italy and only three localities have been published here since 1990 (D'Andrea 1994: east Arezzo in the Apennines, Utzeri et al. 1999: northwest Roma, Hardersen, 2004: Lombardia), most likely due to lack of searches than to strong regression of the species. Much more recently, the species was discovered in two new localities in Lombardy (Dr. Elisa Riservato, Univ. Pavia, in litt.).
The overall known population is stable only because localities that have been lost in northwestern Europe are balanced by those recently discovered in Iberia and northern Italy. A quasi-general decrease is to be expected almost anywhere in the future (but much less so in a large part of the southwestern half of France and northwestern Iberia than elsewhere, due to both mountainous features and a lower agricultural pressure), owing to water management and pollution, irrigation, global warming and subsequent frequent summer drought and stream drying. The Near Threatened category is presently recommended.
